How to make a good song.

People say my songs suck and make fun of me.

Please give me tips on how to make good music because I am bad at making music and wish to get better.

If you want to know the basics on how to create music, learning basic music theory, if you haven’t already, will help tremendously. I am going to write this as if you do not know anything about composition to make it simpler for myself.

  1. Chord Progressions - When starting a song, I start with one instrument and make chords then stick to them. If you don’t have a solid chord progression, the rest of the song won’t sound right. If you have a hard time making up a progression, you can easily find common progressions on various websites.

  2. Melody - The most memorable part of a song is the melody, or at least almost always.
To create a melody, do any of the following:
-Hum to yourself until you’ve found something, and place the notes accordingly.
-If you know how to play an instrument and have one with you, do something similar to a solo on top of the chord progression, taking note if anything is of interest.
-If you know the notes in the key signature, put the first note on the first note of the key and press the spacebar over the other notes and see which ones sound best next.

  3. Percussion - I have just recently learned how to correctly do percussion, so I will only say the very basics: Bass Drum on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th beat, Snare Drum on the 3rd. (One beat being a quarter note’s length.) This is as basic as it gets, but it works.

  4. Bass - I honestly do not know the best way of writing for the bass. An easy way of doing this is to place them on each quarter note on one note for a chord, and change it for the next.

This is all you need for a basic song, but the more the merrier when you get used to it.

NOTE: Don’t actually do this, It won’t help at all.

There have been a million threads like this, go read them.

Do not place the instruments randomly
Take a few notes, then try not too frequently switch instruments.

drugs. ( don’t be serious! just kidding!)

Well, first start to make a part of the song in your head, or just a melody.

Starting with a melody is a good way to make a good song tho. Just something simple, and then add instruments.

this is why aliens sux omg 420 blazeikt

In all seriousness though, making songs carefully and slowly will produce a better piece. I should take my own advice but I never do  It’s why hellstick has some of the best original pieces on the site.

Totally agree.

Thanks friend, that’s a really nice compliment! Truly appreciate it:)

I take time, It usually takes me a week to finish them, I just don’t polish them well. Because when I do I end up butchering everything. My V3 ones have been taking better turns, though. Volume differences, panning, fades and whatnot. It’s an easier program for finetuning.

I normally just compose in one sitting… probably why I never finish a song.

You should do quick loops then c:

Try to imitate common songs, covers, and then try to give them your own spin.

This is what people do when they learn to draw, is they start with tracing a character, or drawing that same thing a million times.

This is what I did when I started Notessimo. In fact, if you go to the first post on my thread, I still have those songs listed there.

In fact, we can not too much you give advice, you must to find your own style!
