  1. Choose key
  2. Tempo
  3. Melody
  4. Bassline
  5. Chords
  6. Percussion
  7. Anything else

If i’m trying to make a really melodious piece i’ll do it like this:

  1. Chord Progression
  2. Bass line (yes making a good bassline adds for some great dynamics in melodies)
  3. Lead
  4. Purcussion (3 and 4 can be interchangeable sometimes i like to hear the beat before the melody)
  5. Extra stuff like background sounds/atmospheres, and harmonies
    If I want to something really rhythmic and groove heavy I’ll do it like this:
  6. Melodic rhythm (i.e. guitars)
  7. Bass line (usually for a really heavy section I will have the bass follow the guitars to add thickness)
  8. Percussion
  9. Optional lead guitar/chord progressions/other more melodic stuff
